Dear Family and Friends,
I am having such an amazing time in São Paulo. My Portuguese is coming along. I have a long way to go, but it has been such a divine grace to have been given the basic Portuguese that I do have and can use to share the good news of Christ's gospel. This past week has been very eventful with many difficulties and blessings, the both of which I have been blessed to be able to savor as the wonderful opportunities to grow that they are.
Exactly a week ago, I took my first walk around the MTC and experienced the streets of São Paulo. This was an incredibly fun experience: going to shops, buying mangoes at the grocery store, and trying to talk to people in a foreign language. I bought a children's book about the Book of Mormon at a nearby Deseret Book store--nothing more that a 8'x12' hole in the wall shop run by a local member--and have been gaining a lot from using it in my study.
This experience, however, seems quite uneventful when compared to the proselytizing activity that we did this past Wednesday. My district and I had the opportunity to hand out and speak to people about The Book of Mormon in O Centro de São Paulo (Downtown). We walked a few blocks from the MTC and boarded a bus, which, barely seconds after I stepped inside (I was the last person to board), took off down the hill, careening around pedestrians, motorcycles, and other obstacles of lesser right of way. Once we arrived, our language teacher deemed the intended proselytizing location to be suboptimal, because of the prevalence of persons of ignoble activity.
That turned out great for us, because we got to walk around possibly the most interesting city in the world until the teacher finally decided that we would proselyte on this really cool bridge right in the center of it all! (definitely google it, it was right underneath the tallest building and you should definitely be able to recognize it) It was almost like an out of body experience, stepping out and watching myself share the gospel in a foreign language with one of the most awesome backdrops that you could possibly fantasize. Anyway, I am completely out of time. But, here is a scripture! Psalms 23:4-5.
Love,
Elder George
